 Youth Rock Camp 2024

Welcome to River City Rock Camp!

This year we are offering a June session and a July session. Pick one or both on your enrollment form!

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT THIS SUMMER?

Each band will have four in-person rehearsals which are 2 1/2 hours long at their designated rehearsal space. During rehearsals you will get to know your band, learn to perform your songs together, pick your band name, learn about music equipment and technology, and problem solve together! At the end of our two weeks of rehearsing there will be a soundcheck demonstration/party and we will end the session with a big rock concert presented at The Granada!

First you will register for the camp & sign-up for an audition time at the link above. After auditions, our staff will assemble the band rosters, pick the songs, and create your rehearsal schedule. Each band will play 4 songs. A coach will be assigned to each band to lead rehearsals an
d to provide instruction. You will begin learning and practicing your songs on your own before the camp begins.

ENROLLMENT ELIGIBILITY
  • There are a limited number of openings available for each session of River City Rock Camp.

  • Enrollment is filled on a first-come, first-served basis upon completion of registration.

  • Once the camp is full, interested participants will be notified and placed on a waiting list to be contacted if a spot becomes available.

AUDITION REQUIREMENT

  • All students are required to audition as part of their enrollment in the River city Rock Camp.

  • The audition serves multiple purposes, including evaluating the student's musical skill level and understanding their musical interests.

  • The purpose of the audition is to help place students into a band that best matches their skill level and musical preferences.

PARTICIPANT SKILL LEVEL REQUIREMENT

  • River City Rock Camp is designed for individuals who have acquired basic proficiency in playing an instrument or as a vocalist.

  • Participants should be able to perform at least at an introductory level on their chosen instrument.

  • If, during the audition process or at any point during the camp, it is determined that a participant requires additional experience or skill development before fully participating in the camp activities, staff will work with the participant and their parents/guardians to create or recommend a plan of action for the student to get the experience they need.

  • This plan of action may include recommendations for additional lessons, practice regimens, or alternative educational opportunities to help the participant gain the necessary skills and confidence to fully engage in the camp activities.

WHAT IF I HAVE CONFLICTS?

We will do our best to work around conflicts during the rehearsal period. We ask that each musician communicate every conflict by listing it in their registration form. We ask that there are no conflicts for the sound check party and concert date.

WHAT WILL AUDITIONS BE LIKE?

Auditions are a private, informal, and brief. The goal of the audition is to learn more about you and to assess your skill level as a musician or vocalist. We can then place you in a band and pick songs that will be fun and enjoyable to play. Auditions are at Richards Music (15 E 8th Street).

For the in-person audition please bring your guitar, bass, or drum sticks. We provide all other equipment, including a full drum set. We would like to hear you play or sing part or all of any song you have been working on or know well. We also like to talk briefly about music interests and inspirations.

Additional things that we will ask you to demonstrate, if possible (but not required):

  • Guitar: Demonstrate open chords, power chords, barre chords. Any scales that you know.

  • Bass: Any scales that you know, and 5 different note names on the fretboard.

  • Drums: 3 different drum beats.

  • Keyboards: Demonstrate C, A, G, D, B, F, B flat, F# chords.

  • Vocals: Match pitches on a keyboard and demonstrate your range.

*If you cannot attend an in-person audition, you may submit a virtual audition via e-mail.

HOW WILL I LEARN THE SONGS?
  • Each student will be assigned a band, a coach, and 4 songs.

  • All students are to learn their individual guitar/bass/drum/piano & vocal parts as well as possible before camp begins.

  • All students remember to learn all the parts of your songs from beginning to end.  Don’t forget about the bridge!

  • Please contact us if you have questions or concerns about learning your songs.

HOW MUCH DOES THE CAMP COST?
  • After you sign-up, you will receive a payment link in an email.

  • The camp fee is $350.

  • We accept PayPal, cash, or checks.  Checks should be made to River City Rock Camp.

  • We have scholarships available. If in need, please fill out our scholarship application.

WANT TO SIGN UP WITH A FRIEND?

Starting a band can be hard. Often, we find ourselves with one or maybe two friends who want to start a band, but still missing the crucial final member or members.  Maybe you still need a drummer or bassist? Tell us that you want to sign up together and we will build a band around you with like minded individuals who share your musical interests.
